Continuing Conversation on Recipe of Influence

It is no secret that a charismatic personality is more likely to influence people.  In the entertainment industry people are the most successful who are great performers, even if they are lacking in talent.  In an interview about her performance in the film version of Evita (1996), Madonna commented that she “learned to sing” for the role. 

When working to develop influence with people, research in counseling is also teaching us that personality is important.  Project MATCH as well as the work of Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy) demonstrate that there is more importance in things like tone, genuine relationship, and similar characteristics in the counselor than in specific interventions.

What we are saying in context, then is that it is at least as important to be friendly, authentic and genuine as it is to learn the steps of the Roman Road and specific theological points.  With an open and patient attitude a person will be willing to educate you about themselves, their views, and be attentive to what you have to share.  They are also more willing to forgive your missteps and allow you time to do your own research to answer questions that you may not have answers to.

So relax when sharing your faith.  Take time out to simply be with the person without an agenda, and you may find that passe conversations will become more of the norm.
